Helpful Deer Hunting Items with Traditional Value

All of us here at eBugout are avid deer hunters during both the gun and bow season. It’s been a tradition in our families for ages, with these skills being passed down from one generation to the next. In this article, I’ll highlight some items that we use every year, helping to keep that tradition going.

Buck Knife Woodsman

This knife was given to my siblings and me when we were old enough to carry a gun out deer hunting. We’ve used this knife every year and wouldn’t trade it for any other. We won’t have to either, as Buck backs up the Woodsman, along with all of their quality knives with the “Buck Forever Warranty”, standing behind their products no matter what. They’re engineered for hunters.

The Woodsman is superbly designed with the perfect choice of 420HC steel, a comfortable handle, ease of cleaning and comes with a quality leather sheath that will last as long as the knife. It is made for those who won’t compromise and want one knife that can do it all. From the tip of the blade, right down to the hilt, the Woodsman is made to field dress, skin, quarter and trim a lifetime worth of deer. This knife is not limited to deer though, it easily handles fish and other game large and small. Striking a fine balance between all of its qualities, The Woodsman simply belongs at a hunter’s side. With a long-standing reputation behind their knives, Buck understands tradition as do those who carry them.

Deer Gambrel

Every hunter has their way of doing things. That’s just how tradition works. Some hunters simply tie a rope around the deer’s neck, hoist and skin away. Other hunters others use a deer-spreading tool such as a gambrel to make the job easier. For those not familiar, a gambrel hooks behind the tendon of a deer’s rear knees, so they can be hung upside-down. For many hunters, this makes the job of getting them up in the air a lot easier. Most models utilize a hook in the middle so a hoist or even a winch can be used.

As a deer hangs, it needs to breathe. A gambrel spreads the hind legs, opening the chest cavity so there’s plenty of air movement. Some traditional hunters simply jam a stick between some ribs to keep the chest open, but we feel the hanging process with this method is more work than necessary.

After “hunting” down (sorry, bad joke) some deer gambrels and hoists, these offer the best value from a variety of price ranges:

Grambel Including Hoist

These models including everything (gambrel, ropes and pulleys) and are made specifically for our task at hand. A couple key features give these a clear advantage. First, the pulleys give the user a mechanical advantage so lifting is much easier. Second, these feature a pulley brake so as the animal is lifted, you can just pull and it automatically locks in place. These are great for people who hang deer by themselves, especially those who don’t want to strain their back in the process. Just a quick mention too, the hoists can be used without the gambrel. If you hang your game by the neck, just tie some rope around the animal’s neck and hoist away. Here is some models we recommend:
